How we enrich the curriculum

At Hurworth House School, we know that learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom. That’s why we offer a wide range of enrichment activities designed to help young people build confidence, explore new interests and discover what makes them feel good—mentally, physically and emotionally.

We provide opportunities for our young people to try new things in a way that suits their learning style. If gentle encouragement is what it takes then we take small steps. We believe that developing skills and connecting with their community should feel meaningful and fun.

Activities beyond the classroom

Dedicated enrichment time is built into the timetable for every young person, giving them a chance to explore new skills or develop passions.

Here’s what they can get involved in:

  • Dungeons & Dragons for prosocial development
  • LEGO building
  • Free dance
  • Gardening
  • Sensory activities
  • Sport including football, horse riding, trampolining, fishing, rock climbing
  • Chess and debate clubs

Our annual residential trip is a standout experience. It gives young people the opportunity to challenge themselves in new environments and to make friends too.

Everything links back to our 3C culture—Creatively Coaching Character—embedding positive attitudes into everyday life.

Shining in our community

Connecting with our community is key to helping young people grow in confidence and purpose.

Here’s how we connect:

  • Museum visits to explore history and culture
  • Art gallery trips for design and creative inspiration
  • Local workplace visits to understand careers in business, media and more
  • Radio station tours for students interested in communications
  • Social skill development through sessions at local leisure centres
  • Voluntary placements and environmental work with the Parish Council
  • Creative learning partnerships with Sunderland University

By connecting with the world beyond school, our students see how their learning applies to real life. They also begin to understand their place in the community and the value they can bring to it.
