How to enrol at our school

We know that choosing the right school is a big decision especially when your child experiences the world differently. At our school, we work closely with families and local authorities to make sure our setting is the right fit for each young person. Using tailored care and support, we shape your child’s life helping them grow into the person you know they’ll become.

Admissions criteria

We provide specialist education for up to 80 young people aged 5 – 19. We welcome both male and female students who may be experiencing a wide range of challenges, including:

  • Social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs
  • Complex needs, including attachment difficulties
  • Trauma or anxiety
  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

We accept referrals from both local and national authorities and are experienced in working with some of the most vulnerable young people in the UK.

Our admissions procedure

Step 1: Referral received

We receive a referral from a local authority, parent/carer or professional. This typically includes key background information and current needs.

Step 2: Initial assessment

Our team reviews the referral and carries out an initial assessment based on the information provided.

Step 3: School visit

We invite the young person, their family or carers to visit Hurworth House School. This gives everyone a chance to get a feel for the environment and ask any questions.

Step 4: Placement decision

Following the visit and assessment, we consider whether Hurworth House is the right fit for the young person’s needs. If so, we make a formal placement offer.

Step 5: Personalised planning

Our education and care teams begin working closely with the young person, their family and any professionals involved to create a tailored support plan.

Step 6: Transition and start

A transition plan is agreed based on the individual’s needs. This might include phased visits or a gradual build-up to full attendance to give the child a great head start.
