How we support your child's future

Careers support at Newbury Manor School

We support students, with their parents and carers, to consider their future options, realise their potential and decide how their skills and experiences fit with the various opportunities open to them. We also support students to prepare for their preferred destination whether that is to continue with further education, employment, training or living independently. We have a person-centred approach to student outcomes through our EHCP annual reviews process where we collaborate with all stakeholders to shape clear and ambitious targets for young people to prepare for their next steps.

We keep parents and carers informed about our careers activities through our careers bulletin, emailed out termly. We also invited all parents to give us their feedback on our careers programme as part of our annual stakeholder evaluation process.

We collaborate closely with the local authority due to the vulnerable nature of our students, who all have special education needs and disabilities with Education, Health, and Care plans in place. We ensure that we know of all the services available to support students to access these and share this knowledge amongst our community.

During their time at Newbury Manor School your child will have some, or all, of the following built into their timetable:

  • Employability/work skills: teaching pupils about careers and the skills and knowledge they’ll need to contribute to society and lead fulfilled lives. This learning is built into all strands of the curriculum.
  • Work experience/placement: gives pupils opportunities to develop knowledge and understanding of work and to develop work-based skills
  • Visits to colleges to help inform their decision making
  • Careers information: provide pupils with information and resources about courses, occupations and career paths
  • Careers guidance or careers counselling; a deeper intervention where their skills, attributes and interests are explored in relation to their career options

We also offer your child the opportunity to meet with an appropriately qualified careers adviser who will provide professional, impartial, and confidential advice and guidance to enable them to make informed decisions and to plan the next steps towards their future, including guidance with applying for college courses, supported internships, employment or apprenticeships. These meetings take place by the time they are sixteen and again by the time they are eighteen.
