Celebrating community spirit in Lancashire

Edge House is making a real difference in its local community and is a shining example of how care can go beyond its walls, helping young people build confidence and empathy through meaningful experiences.

Located in Blackpool, Edge House provides a safe and supportive environment for young people aged 7 to 18 years with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs and mild complex needs such as ADHD and autism. The home was praised by Ofsted for their enthusiasm to support young people to thrive within the community, grow as individuals and achieve their potential. Inspectors recognised;

  • “Since the last inspection, the same two children have remained living at the home. Both children have continued to maintain and make positive progress supported by staff who provide warm and nurturing care. One child said, ‘Staff have helped me and make me feel safe’.”
  • “One child is working towards completing their exams and has a clear plan of how to reach their goal of becoming a pilot. Staff take an active role in helping the child to fulfil their aspirations and goals. For example, they take the child to visit airports.”
  • “One child has an early morning paper round, attends school and regularly attends the gym in the evenings.”

What truly sets Edge House apart is its deep connection to the local community. The home actively encourages young people to give back and take part in meaningful activities that they are interested in. Recent examples include:

  • Supporting the homeless: One young person prepared and handed out hot meals, drinks, and snacks to those in need – a favourite being his home-made Chilli Con Carne! Reflecting on the experience, he said: “It felt good. Everyone we spoke to and gave food to was really happy, they were smiling and kept saying thank you.”
  • Charity fundraising: Edge House took part in the Santa Dash 3km run in Blackpool, raising funds for Brian House Children’s Hospice. The young person even donated £30 of his own allowance to support the cause.
  • Future plans: The team and young person are preparing for upcoming charity events, including the Beaverbrooks 10k Fun Run, Bubble Rush, and Blackpool Colour Run, plus much more, all raising money for Trinity Hospice and Brian House Children’s Hospice.
  • Learning through giving: To prepare for these activities, the young person has been completing Oak Academy lessons in cooking, nutrition, and food safety, building valuable life skills.

Leah-Paige Lomas, Interim Manager at Edge House, said:
“I am proud of the strong community links we have developed. Activities such as charity fundraising, volunteering to support the homeless, and participation in local events not only build confidence and empathy but also teach valuable life skills. These experiences help our young people feel connected, valued, and empowered to make a positive difference.

I would like to thank the entire team for their enthusiasm, creativity, and unwavering commitment to the children. Together, we will keep striving for excellence and ensure Edge House remains a place where young people feel safe, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.”
