Celebrating the magic of The Den

The Den, an Aspris children’s home in South West England, won the Be Your Best – Young Person Award at the Aspris Awards 2025. This recognition carried special significance, as The Den was the only Aspris children’s home to be shortlisted in two award categories in last year’s awards – a testament to the extraordinary care, dedication and community they build around the young people they support.

This nomination comes from Matthew, who shared his story with us; his reflections capture the profound and lasting impact the team at The Den has had on Matthew’s life.

Aspris’ Be Your Best Award shines a spotlight on those colleagues who go above and beyond to help young people fulfil their potential. Nominations for the 2026 awards are now open until 22 March, with young people, families and external partners all invited to put forward the individuals and teams who make a genuine difference. Finding stability, care and a sense of belonging

Matthew lived at The Den for many years, but his journey there began during an extremely challenging time in his life. When he first arrived, he described himself as “an absolute nightmare” – a child overwhelmed by emotion, labelled as ‘too difficult’, and unsure where he belonged.

With patience, structure and deep compassion, the team at The Den helped him find stability. Through consistent routines, clear boundaries and genuine care, Matthew began to understand that he mattered, and that happiness and security were things he deserved.

Today, he’s thriving. Matthew is now studying to gain qualifications in agriculture – goals that once felt out of reach.

In his own words:

“It’s the magic of The Den that really harnesses every kid’s unique ability to be themselves.”
