North Hill House receives glowing report from Ofsted under new framework

North Hill House School, a specialist school in Frome, was inspected under Ofsted’s new framework in February 2026, and has received positive feedback in all areas.

Since January 2026, independent schools and colleges in England have been inspected under the new Ofsted framework. This updated framework brings in a five-point grading scale, replaces single-word judgments with more detailed report cards, and focuses on inclusion, colleague wellbeing, and evidence-based evaluations that highlight impact.

North Hill House, a specialist school for young people aged 6 to 19 with autism spectrum disorder and associated conditions, was inspected in February and met the expected standard in five out of six areas, and was ranked as strong standard in one area.

Personal development and wellbeing is a key focus at North Hill House School

The school’s strong standard in ‘personal development and wellbeing’ reflects the focus placed on this as a key aspect of the curriculum. The report mentioned the school’s ‘Wonderful Wednesday’ programme, which broadens pupil’s learning experiences through enrichment activities such as cooking, LEGO or music. The report also mentioned the school’s careers programme, saying:

“They complete work experience in a variety of settings, including farm work, animal care and journalism. The curriculum includes practical learning experiences that help prepare older pupils for adulthood.”

The report rated the school as meeting the expected standard in the following areas:

  • Achievement
  • Attendance and behaviour
  • Curriculum and teaching
  • Inclusion
  • Leadership and governance

Pupils’ needs are at the heart of the school’s work

Inspectors noted in their report that pupils’ needs are at the heart of its work, with ambitious leaders for all pupils, whatever their starting points. They added:

“Many have had previous negative experiences of education. The school’s culture, marked by trusting relationships, empathy and high goals, helps pupils reconnect with learning.”

Michael Pearce, Headteacher at North Hill House School, said:

“I’m extremely proud of the work we’ve carried out here at North Hill House since June 2023. As a new leadership team from September 2023, we worked tirelessly to ensure the very best education and development for all our learners.

“The relationships between colleagues and learners are lovely to see. Engagement in learning has significantly improved and when I walk through the school I feel immensely proud to be here. We are a team here at North Hill House, and everyone who has supported us on this journey should be congratulated for their support, direction and guidance.”

Congratulations to the team!
